Way back a long time ago, when the BeingJohnMalkovich website was but a twinkle in the eyes of Spike Jonze and the Sakebomb squad, we had a few beers and came up with a wacky idea, the likes of which had never been seen in all of Hollywood's rolling hills: an alternative promotional campaign with, get this, a web component! Genius!

In the movie, John Cusack and Catherine Keener decide to capitalize on the John Malkovich portal they have found by offering $200 "rides" through his subconscious. They advertise their service in the paper with the words "Ever Want to be Someone Else?", and are flooded with various characters who have decided, for various reasons, that they do indeed want to be someone else. John and Catherine called their company JM Inc., so we did the same thing.

We built a website, www.jmincorporated.com, and set up a 1-800 number, both with an appropriately cheesy/low-budget space/new age theme. We launched a large multi-media advertising campaign that included print ads in the backs of weekly newspapers, Rolling Stone magazine, a video ad on MTV, and various web banners, all asking people whether or not they wanted to be someone else. When you went to the site or number, you had to enter who you wanted to be and why. And, just like in the movie, we were flooded with requests.

Eventually, the people who signed up on the website were contacted and driven, ever so subtly, to the actual Being John Malkovich website, where they were so pleasantly surprised with our clever campaign that they not only found themselves paying full admission to see the movie several times, but actually brought friends and family along, and in certain cases, forced perfect strangers at gunpoint to pay the admission price, whether or not they wanted to see the movie, or even were anywhere near a theater. Now also, you will notice, we have collected some of this information for the general public on this web page, including an exclusive DJ Jo Jo Johansen remix of some of the 800 number submissions.

Thus, this truly was the single greatest achievement of film promotion in the history of the world. It embarrasses us, in fact, to have been so insanely successful in such an absurd world of marketing and promotion. Long live JM Inc, and sakebomb.com while you are at it.
